Magna Steyr concluded production of the two related vehicles in Graz, Austria.

Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 models are now sold out in the United States. According to a report from CarsDirect, no new inventory remains for either sports car.

The end of sales comes after Magna Steyr finished production of the two related vehicles in March. The Austrian contract manufacturer built the cars at its plant in Graz, concluding a joint project.

Shared Roots, Different Personalities

The Supra and Z4 shared a platform, engines, and much of their engineering. Toyota and BMW, however, gave them distinct identities. The Supra was available only as a coupe. The Z4 remained a roadster with a folding soft top.

Low Sales Led to Discontinuation

Neither car was a high-volume seller. Toyota delivered 2,953 Supras in the US in 2025. BMW moved 2,113 Z4s. The slow demand likely reinforced the automakers’ decisions to discontinue the models.

A New Toyota Supra Is Coming

Toyota has confirmed it remains committed to the Supra nameplate. The current generation is not the end for the Japanese sports car. The company has not provided a timeline or technical details for a successor.

However, public statements suggest another Supra is in development. Unlike the current model, the next one could use a Toyota-developed powertrain, moving away from the BMW collaboration. A new Supra would fit into Toyota’s growing GR lineup, which is now a separate sub-brand for performance cars. It would join an increasingly diverse stable of enthusiast-oriented models, including what we’re hoping will be next generations of the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR86.

BMW’s Roadster Future

BMW has not announced plans for a Z4 replacement. The company has not commented on the possibility of a new roadster. An i4 Convertible is in development, but it is a four-seat electric car and not a direct Z4 successor.

For now, the 4 Series Convertible is BMW’s only open-top model. It is expected to be available with M Performance and full M versions until the end of the decade. The 2 Series/M2 is closer in size to the Z4, but it is only offered as a coupe.

The market for dedicated internal combustion two-door sports cars is shrinking. As electrification grows, affordable, traditional sports cars are becoming rare. Toyota’s commitment to a new Supra could offer a welcome return for enthusiasts. The situation has become even bleaker after Porsche changed its plans and decided against bringing back the 718 Boxster and Cayman with gasoline engines.
