BMW tests electric i3 wagon ahead of production debut - electric i3 wagon
Interior features remain unconfirmed but are expected to follow the i3 sedan’s minimalist design language.

A partially camouflaged BMW i3 Touring prototype was recently captured during tests at the Nürburgring, providing an early glimpse of the electric wagon set for a 2027 release. The images reveal a design rooted in the i3 sedan but with key practical improvements, such as an extended roof and a more functional tailgate. Unlike the outgoing 3 Series Touring, the i3 Touring prototype omits a separate rear glass button—a feature removed from the i5 Touring for aerodynamic efficiency.

Design and Practicality Enhancements

Interior features remain unconfirmed but are expected to follow the i3 sedan’s minimalist design language. A large central display, pillar-to-pillar windshield projection, and the iDrive rotary knob integrated into the rearview mirror are likely to appear. BMW has already ruled out a center dial between the seats, and the 31-liter front storage compartment from the sedan will likely remain unchanged, reinforcing the Touring’s focus on practicality.

BMW’s Focus on Electric Wagons

While the i3 Touring will launch in 2027 alongside a refreshed i5 Touring, the future of combustion-powered wagons at BMW remains unclear. The brand’s history with the Touring badge suggests these models will continue, though their availability in key markets like the U.S., where the only current wagon is the premium-priced M5 Touring, could restrict their appeal.

The i3 Touring’s electric architecture distinguishes it from a potential combustion-powered 3 Series Touring, which would retain the CLAR platform. This separation reflects BMW’s strategy of modernizing its lineup while keeping traditional body styles in production. Production of the i3 Touring will occur in Munich, while any future 3 Series Touring would likely be manufactured in Dingolfing alongside its sedan counterpart.

A Standout in a SUV-Dominated Environment

BMW’s decision to maintain wagon models sets it apart in an era dominated by crossovers. The i3 Touring’s arrival in 2027 shows the brand’s commitment to buyers who prioritize practicality over raised ride heights.
