South Australian car wash bans Mazda SUVs over sensor risks - mazda suv sensor risks
The warning applies to Mazda’s CX-3, CX-5, CX-8, and CX-9 models at a South Australian car wash facility.

A car wash in South Australia has posted a warning for owners of Mazda SUVs, explicitly advising them to avoid its automated machines. The sign at the facility lists the affected models: the CX-3, CX-5, CX-8, and CX-9. The business declined to comment when contacted for clarification.

Online discussions have focused on two possible explanations for the warning. One theory centers on Mazda’s i-Activsense system, which integrates cameras and radar for advanced safety features such as lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring. A Reddit user claimed the system either disables multiple functions or triggers false alerts when exposed to car wash environments. Another theory suggests concerns about the vehicles’ paint, which some describe as unusually soft and prone to damage from brushes.

A spokesperson for Mazda Australia stated the company has no record of owners reporting problems with automatic car washes, including issues related to i-Activsense or paint damage. However, global ownership manuals for these models include specific instructions for using conveyor-belt car washes. Owners are advised to turn off the i-Activsense system entirely and avoid pressing the brake pedal during the process. The manual also clarifies that Mazda does not accept liability for scratches caused by poorly maintained brushes.

Owners of the affected SUVs have taken precautions to reduce risks. In a June 2026 Mazda CX-5 Owners Facebook group post, one member asked how to disable parking sensors before entering a car wash. Mazda’s manuals, however, offer a clear rationale for why owners should exercise caution when using automated car washes.

The facility’s choice to exclude these models implies practical concerns—either about system malfunctions or paint damage. Without additional input from the owner, the exact reason may never be confirmed.
