BYD Australia clarifies that the $19,990 drive-away price for the Atto 1 Essential hatch is not a stock clearance strategy. The company confirms the base model will remain in the Australian market, according to its statements.
BYD Australia chief operating officer, Stephen Collins, said, “It’s definitely not a means to clear stock. We still plan to keep Essential. We think it’s an important part of the lineup.” Collins added that the Essential helps with accessibility and makes the technology available to every Australian.
August sales data shows the Atto 1 as the second-most-popular light car, with 3838 sales year-to-date. BYD says just over 50 per cent of Atto 1 sales go to the Premium, with the special offer on the Essential skewing the split towards the base grade.
The Premium trim upgrades the battery capacity, raising the Essential’s WLTP-rated range from 220km (powered by a 30kWh pack) to 310km with a 43.2kWh battery. Additional features include alloy wheels, LED lighting, heated power-adjustable seats, a wireless charging pad, and a 360-degree camera.
The current Essential’s discounted price offers a saving of $5572 to $7070, varying by state registration. The promotion is set to continue until mid-December, with Collins anticipating it will remain in effect through that timeframe.
At its current price, the Atto 1 undercuts the next most affordable electric car, the Geely EX2, by $9190 after on-road costs. The Atto 1 Essential is also tied with the MG 3 Vibe as the cheapest new car in the country.
Once the promotion ends on 15 December, the Atto 1 Essential is likely to return to $23,990 plus on-road costs. Cars ordered before then must be delivered by 30 December for the deal to be valid. Additionally, other available options for the BYD Atto 1 include the 2026 Premium Hatchback FWD for $26,989, excluding government charges, and the 2026 Essential Hatchback FWD for $19,998, excluding government charges. The 2025 Premium Hatchback FWD is also available for $30,888 drive away, and the 2026 Premium Hatchback FWD can be purchased for $29,990 drive away or $25,990 excluding government charges.
