Originally launched in 2011, more than five million examples of the Mazda CX-5 have been produced across three different generations.

The latest iteration of Mazda’s best-selling CX-5 will now feature Google Gemini technology, which will be integrated into models equipped with Google software in various European markets and languages. By activating this feature, drivers will be able to utilize Gemini, which leverages Artificial Intelligence to facilitate more intuitive voice commands, replacing the existing Google Assistant system. This allows for a more conversational interaction, eliminating the need for drivers to recall specific phrases to issue voice commands within their vehicle.

With Google Gemini, the CX-5 now supports a more natural and fluid communication style, making it easier for drivers to interact with their vehicle’s infotainment system. This development follows Mazda’s earlier commitment to introducing hands-free technology that is both intuitive and user-friendly, announced at the unveiling of the third-generation CX-5. Notably, the latest model has abandoned the traditional rotary controller in favor of a touchscreen and voice commands for a more streamlined experience.

Deployment and Features

Mazda is rolling out Google Gemini to CX-5 models through over-the-air updates, with support for 12 European languages. To access the full range of features, drivers must sign in to their Google Account and have a stable data connection. Gemini enables drivers to search for destinations based on their preferences or the purpose of their journey, rather than requiring a specific address. For instance, drivers can ask Gemini to handle to a highly-rated cafe and then refine their request as needed.

Earlier this year, Mazda announced that it had sold over five million units of the CX-5 worldwide. In the UK alone, more than 105,000 units have been sold, making the CX-5 the Japanese manufacturer’s most successful model. First introduced in 2011, the CX-5 has undergone three generations of development, with the latest model launching earlier this year. The third-generation CX-5 generated significant interest, with Mazda reporting its largest ever order bank prior to the start of sales.

The entry-level Prime Line model starts at £31,550, and all versions of the new CX-5 come equipped with a 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G petrol engine, featuring Mazda M Hybrid technology.
