New findings indicate that a significant portion of UK drivers might advance their plans to buy an electric vehicle if the upcoming autumn Budget introduces additional financial incentives. The research reveals that 61% of surveyed motorists would be willing to purchase an EV earlier if the Chancellor provides further support during the Budget.
Of the 1,500 drivers polled, 21% stated they would definitely move up their EV purchase timeline with extra government backing, while another 40% expressed possible interest. Meanwhile, 11% of respondents already intend to buy an electric car, regardless of any policy changes.
Drivers aged 18 to 34 showed the strongest inclination to switch to electric sooner with incentives, with 29% saying they would expedite their decision. In comparison, only 10% of those over 65 shared the same view.
A study by road safety organization Ooono found that 55% of participants expressed unease about buying an EV due to fears over shifting government policies. Particular worries about potential pay-per-mile charging instead of traditional road tax contributed to their hesitation.
Even among current EV owners, 73% expressed concern over future policy uncertainty. Beyond upfront costs, respondents also highlighted the expense of charging and the limited availability of public charging points as barriers.
46% of those surveyed cited high initial costs as a deterrent, while 41% pointed to insufficient public charging infrastructure. A government incentive ranging from £1,001 to £2,000 would likely encourage many to switch sooner.
Mike Skyte, UK market lead for Ooono, commented: “The data shows strong demand among British drivers to adopt electric vehicles, but government policies will shape when they make that transition.”
Skyte further noted that the autumn Budget could boost confidence in long-term EV costs, but lingering doubts over future taxes and support might discourage buyers.
The Budget is scheduled for Wednesday, 28 October 2026, though it remains unclear whether new EV incentives will be announced.
